Cross Cultural Orientation & Team Building

Preparing Teams for Outreach

In order to prepare teams for their cross-cultural “plunge”, World Encounter conducts the Cross Cultural Orientation. The CCO seeks to prepare teams moving cross-culturally for the inevitable challenges that come with culture shock. On a weekend retreat, away from the demands of work and home, short-term mission teams draw together for cross-cultural orientation and team building.

Participants are informed about the culture specifics of the host country, and are trained to enter another culture with a mental posture of openness, acceptance and trust.

The CCO also prepares team members to share their personal faith story in culturally sensitive ways. The goal is to encourage building bridges of understanding with Christians of other cultures, to nurture unity in the body of Christ, and to effectively share our faith stories with others.

Team Building

Emphasis on team building is also a major focus as the team learns to listen to, care for, and encourage one another as they journey into another culture.

In addition to building a strong team, the group also looks at issues of cultural differences. When moving cross-culturally, we naturally compare our prior experiences with new cross-cultural experiences, and tend to fall into negative comparisons. The CCO helps people adjust that natural tendency to prepare the heart for a positive entrance into the host culture.

Through simulated cross-cultural experiences, personal history giving, Bible study, and developing a strategy for conflict resolution, the CCO retreat prepares team members to support one another in cross-cultural outreach.
